You are not alone if you have ever had the question arise in your mind in front of a 1000 litre IBC tank: “how heavy is this thing when it’s completely full?”

It’s one of the most useful questions in industrial storage and logistics and the answer isn’t as simple as you may think.

The weight will vary depending on what is in the tank and that one factor makes all the difference.

Let’s get this straight.

What is a 1000 Litre IBC Tank?

The Intermediate Bulk Container (IBC) is the standard container used to transport chemicals.

It is a bulk liquid, chemical and granular material storage and transport container that can be reused in the industrial process.

The 1000 litre standard composite IBC is designed to store and transport bulk liquids, and features a built-in pallet for easy and cost-efficient handling.

The rigid IBC Totes have integrated pallet bases whose sizes are typically close to the common pallet size of 1200 mm × 1000 mm.

In terms of height, most 1000L models sit at around 1,150 mm to 1,175 mm.

That cube shape is not by chance, it’s by design for stacking, space utilization and forklift usage.

The container is comprised of three components:

  • An inner HDPE (high-density polyethylene) bottle
  • A galvanised steel cage
  • A base consisting of plastic, composite, or steel, for a pallet

The total weight of the tank is composed of the following components.

What is the Weight of an Empty 1000 Litre IBC Tank?

You must first know the empty weight (tare weight) before filling.

A normal 1000 litre IBC with a nozzle and steel cage is approximately 65kg when empty.

If you add more attachments (IBC cover, additional nozzles to fill or empty the container), this weight increases.

The zero weight and the difference between it and the actual weight varies slightly according to the manufacturer and configuration.

As a working range, an empty 1000L IBC will weigh from about 50kg to 70kg, again depending on the build.

How Much Does a 1000 Litre IBC Weigh When Full?

This is where it gets interesting – and, where most people get it wrong.

The actual weight is not 1,000 kg plus the weight of the tank.

This is dependent on the liquid’s density that you are storing.

The standard for water is 1kg/litre, but not all the contents of an IBC are water.

The water in a full IBC water tank at its maximum capacity (1000 litres) has a minimum weight of 1000 kg.

In addition, the IBC has to be taken into consideration.

So when a 1,000 litre IBC is full of water, the total weight is at least 1,065kg (liquid + tare weight of the container).

A 1000 litre IBC filled with water and the container will weigh around 1025 to 1060 kg.

This is already more than a metric tonne.

Treat it accordingly.

How the Density of a Liquid Affects Its Function

The convenient property of water is that its density is 1 kg per litre.

However, most industrial liquids have a higher density.

Chemicals, fertilisers, lubricants, and food-grade syrups are all higher density that would mean that if you were to fill an IBC with them it would weigh much more than if it was filled with water.

The total weight will be greater for liquids such as chemicals or oils.

For instance, if an IBC is filled with liquid at 1.2 kg/L density, the load is significantly more than if filled with the same liquid at 1.0 kg/L density, and the calculation is key to ensuring the safe transport and structural integrity.

Formula

Full Weight = Tank Tare Weight + (Volume × Liquid Density)

If your IBC has a tare weight of 60 kg and you fill it with a liquid at 1.2 kg/L density, the full weight is:

60 + (1,000 × 1.2) = 1,260 kg

A significant improvement from the water column; it makes a world of difference when it comes to floor loading, forklift ratings, and vehicle payloads.

A few models of the IBC indicate that they can accommodate a maximum liquid density of 1.9, which is almost two times water.

Before filling, always refer to the manufacturer’s specification plate.

The Significant Role of the Full Weight

It isn’t only a trivia question for a warehouse manager.

The weight is not to be taken lightly.

IBC weights can affect the safe use of handling equipment and safety standards for the transportation of hazardous materials as outlined by the UN and Department of Transportation.

Accidents, equipment damage or regulatory fines can occur due to overloaded containers.

UN/DOT approved IBC totes come with a marking label which shows the maximum authorized weight.

All forklifts and pallet jacks should be rated for the entire load of the IBC.

Vehicle weight limits must be adhered to in order to comply with the transport regulations for financial penalties and safety reasons, and the manufacturer’s stacking instructions will also have to be followed.

Each UN rated IBC is permanently marked on the UN rating plate on the cage with the stacking load test rating on the stacking front.

This rating indicates the maximum load that can be added to the IBC when the IBC is filled to the rated capacity.

Beware of that plate!

Most 1000 litre IBCs can be stacked to a maximum of 2 IBCs when full and 4 IBCs when empty.

In essence, that’s the whole story about respecting the weight limits in play.

A Full IBC is Designed to be Moved by a Forklift Truck

Moving a 1000 litre IBC is not something that can be done as an afterthought.

The load should be secured for transportation with heavy duty straps or ratchet tie down systems and should be balanced up and down the vehicle to prevent imbalance.

Anti-slip mats or spill pallets can be placed under pallets to reduce the number of moves required when loading and unloading.

Regular inspections should be performed on long-distance trips to verify that the IBC tanks are still safe, secure, compliant to UN approval and meet safety standards.

If your contents are considered hazardous, “UN certified” means that the tank has been tested and accepted for carrying hazardous materials according to international standards.

The data plate must agree to the UN certification, manufacturer and rated capacity – missing or damaged data plates is a compliance problem with regulated materials.

Does the Type of Tank (Stainless Steel vs HDPE) Impact the Full Weight?

Yes, it does.

The most popular IBCs are made of an HDPE inner bottle wrapped in a galvanised steel cage.

However, there are stainless steel IBCs designed for corrosive or high purity applications and with a significantly greater tare weight.

Most IBC totes manufactured of HDPE are appropriate for liquids close to the density of water, stainless steel or metal alloy IBC tanks might be required for corrosive or high-density materials.

If you choose a full-on stainless steel IBC you will find that the empty weight is significantly heavier than a standard composite IBC, which means that you will also have a higher weight once filled.

The default model for most common applications in industrial and commercial applications in UAE is the composite HDPE-cage model.

It’s not too heavy, does not compromise on chemical resistance or UN requirement, and doesn’t unnecessarily increase your logistics costs.
